§ 2-164. Duties.

  • It shall be the duty of the members and employees of the police department to:

    (1)

    Preserve the public peace;

    (2)

    Detect and prevent crimes;

    (3)

    Arrest violators of the law;

    (4)

    Protect the rights of persons and property;

    (5)

    Preserve peace at all public meetings and public places;

    (6)

    Prevent and remove, whenever possible, all nuisances on or in the streets, waters, and all other places;

    (7)

    Regulate and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic on the streets;

    (8)

    Investigate traffic accidents and determine the cause and responsibility for the accidents;

    (9)

    Enforce the penal laws of the state, county and city;

    (10)

    Enforce the penal ordinances of the city; and

    (11)

    Perform and discharge all other duties as are imposed upon them by the laws of the state, by Charter, ordinances or resolutions of the city, or by the city council.
